The following guidelines apply to the Exterior Eggshell and Full Gloss paint finishes, suitable for use on softwood and hardwood window frames, cladding, gates and garden furniture.

Surface preparation

  • Ensure the surface is sound, clean, dry and free from dirt, grease and any other contamination.
  • Fill any cracks, holes and open joins with appropriate exterior filler.

For exterior bare wood surfaces

  • Lightly sand the surface to improve the paint’s adhesion.
  • In environments where wood rotting fungi is likely to occur, treat with exterior wood preservative prior to priming.
  • Where required use Farrow & Ball Wood Knot & Resin Blocking Primer to patch prime knotty or resinous woods (please refer to the Product Advice Sheet for more detailed information).
  • Then apply a full coat of Farrow & Ball Exterior Wood Primer & Undercoat in the correct colour tone for your top coat.
  • Allow a minimum of four hours drying time between coats.

For previously painted exterior wood surfaces

  • Sand back areas of paint that have peeled or blistered, to achieve a good ‘key’.
  • Then apply one full coat of Farrow & Ball Exterior Wood Primer & Undercoat in the correct colour tone for your top coat.
  • Allow a minimum of four hours drying time between coats.

Paint application

  • When using more than one tin of the same colour check that the batch numbers are the same (see the base of the tin). If not then mix the tins together before use.
  • Stir paint thoroughly before use.

A guide to the 'From the Anvil' product finishes

Steve HallComment

Beeswax Finish (for internal use)

The beeswax finish is the most authentic finish for steel. When the blacksmiths have finished forging each product the colours left in the steel range from blue to deep red ochre.

To preserve these beautiful colours and the texture from the hammer and anvil, pure beeswax is applied. This gives a subtle, matt richness to the metal and offers excellent protection when products are fitted internally and properly maintained.

Black Finish (for internal or external use)

The satin Black Finish is baked in a high-temperature oven giving it an attractive, durable and corrosion-resistant finish which is low maintenance and can be used internally or externally. It is resistant to moisture so can be used in bathrooms and damp conditions.

It is recommended that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.

Pewter Patina Finish (for internal or external use)

This finish is elegant and beautifully highlights the texture of the steel. The unique and complex process runs deep into the metal resulting in an unmatched contrast of texture and colour. It has excellent anti-corrosion properties but we recommend that this finish is wiped with a lightly oiled cloth from time-to-time which will remove harmful deposits and maintain it in its original condition.
